Graduation photos end up on the wall at your parents' house for the next thirty years, so it is worth getting the makeup right. The good news is that it is simpler than a wedding: the aim is you, looking fresh and happy, in daylight.
Daylight first
Most graduation photos are taken outside, in daylight, often in the middle of the day. Daylight shows texture and heavy makeup more than any other light.
- A light, glowing base rather than a full matte one
- Concealer only where it is needed
- Soft definition around the eyes rather than a strong smoky eye
- Blush and a little bronzer for warmth, because black gowns can drain colour from the face

The gown and the cap
Black gowns and coloured hoods sit right under your face in every photo, so a little extra warmth on the cheeks and lips stops you looking pale next to them. The cap sits on your forehead, so keep powder light there and avoid anything that will transfer onto the band.
A long day
Graduations are a lot of waiting around, then the ceremony, the photos and usually a meal. Prep your skin, set the makeup lightly, and pack your lipstick, blotting papers and a cotton bud.
Throwing the cap
Every graduate wants the cap-throwing photo. Waterproof mascara and lashes that are properly set mean you can look up into the sun without anything moving.
Booking graduation makeup
I do graduation makeup at my studio in Bingham, just outside Nottingham, or at yours by quote. Friends graduating together can get ready together: tell me how many of you there are and when you need to leave for the ceremony. Your appointment is booked once it is paid.
There is more about occasion makeup on my services page, or send me the date.
